Hi Bolters,

I searched this topic and found some info, but not specifically what I wanted, so forgive me if I'm beating a dead horse.

I'm getting ready to start painting the frame of my AD truck and was wondering what you all used for undercoat. This will be a hot rod/work truck. I would like it to look nice, but my priority is protection and durability. If you have any advice or opinions, I'm all ears. Thanks as always for your help Bolters.

I use POR15. Tough as nails.

Sandblasted and sprayed with Eastwoods Epoxy Primer, then top coated with Chassis Black. Now they have an Epoxy based top coat.

'Nuther vote for POR-15.

Someone else mentioned on another thread concerning chassis painting,it's lasted the best part of 60 years with fairly basic protection,so anything you do will probably outlast most of us....!

Jockbolter50, did you brush, roll or spray on the POR-15? The photos of your truck look great!

Thanks for the compliment.
That was brushed on,it flows out, covers well and drys to a real nice gloss.
It's much safer than spraying and less mess, assuming you wear gloves and something with long sleeves.(mandatory!)
I only had a few little dust problems.

Probably the main downside of POR is it's UV sensitivity.
Although you can top coat it.
I opted not to.
As I said before,I'm relying on the fact it's all basically hidden by bodywork and have absolutely no intention of it seeing the sun!
If it does I'll have bigger problems to worry about than fading paint!

Previous posts have mentioned blasting and priming before POR 15 but, I have decent paint on the frame but, it needs an update because it looks rough. Mostly it is just dirty and worn down.
Should I clean up and paint with coat of POR 15 or do you have any better suggestions?
Thanks
Peter

Someone told me to use "CHASSIS SAVER" from Magnet Paints. It is supposed to be easier to use and safer than POR-15. Is anyone familiar with it?

I am curious. What did the factory treat the frame with? My truck (53 Chevy) had a little bit of surface rust but very little pitting. It looked like bare steel to me so I wire brushed and painted it black.

After giving it some thought, I think I should have left it alone. It lasted just fine for over 50 years without my black paint.

I am not aware of any factory painted frame. It you think about it, no one sees the frame and rust won't hurt steel that thick. that would be just an unreasonable expense for the manufacturer.
