I searched this topic and found some info, but not specifically what I wanted, so forgive me if I'm beating a dead horse.
I'm getting ready to start painting the frame of my AD truck and was wondering what you all used for undercoat. This will be a hot rod/work truck. I would like it to look nice, but my priority is protection and durability. If you have any advice or opinions, I'm all ears. Thanks as always for your help Bolters.

Someone else mentioned on another thread concerning chassis painting,it's lasted the best part of 60 years with fairly basic protection,so anything you do will probably outlast most of us....!

It's much safer than spraying and less mess, assuming you wear gloves and something with long sleeves.(mandatory!) I only had a few little dust problems.
Probably the main downside of POR is it's UV sensitivity. Although you can top coat it. I opted not to. As I said before,I'm relying on the fact it's all basically hidden by bodywork and have absolutely no intention of it seeing the sun! If it does I'll have bigger problems to worry about than fading paint!

Mostly it is just dirty and worn down. Should I clean up and paint with coat of POR 15 or do you have any better suggestions? Is anyone familiar with it? | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 2,201 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 2,201 | I am curious. What did the factory treat the frame with? My truck (53 Chevy) had a little bit of surface rust but very little pitting. It looked like bare steel to me so I wire brushed and painted it black.
After giving it some thought, I think I should have left it alone. It lasted just fine for over 50 years without my black paint. | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 Master Gabster | Master Gabster Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 | I am not aware of any factory painted frame. It you think about it, no one sees the frame and rust won't hurt steel that thick. that would be just an unreasonable expense for the manufacturer.
