48 1.5 ton Loadmaster, I would like to have a more accurate temperature gauge reading, I am assuming the gas in the capillary tube is almost or completely empty. I would like to keep my original and just have it serviced. The gauge face on all of my gauges look great, with their natural patina. Any suggestions who would just replace the capillary tube, and engine sending unit?

Take a look at this link. You should be able to do it yourself.

I have used Bob's Speedometer in Michigan for my '50 Chevy COE and '47 Diamond T which both required recharge of the fluid, and replacement of the capillary tube. I was told the fluid is not just ether, but also a small amount of glycerin and alcohol. I recall that the last time it cost $180 or so. On both, I instructed them to leave the gauge face alone, for the same reasons 801curt stated. Both work great, within 2-4 degrees, which is a close as you can tell. They are listed in Hemmings or perhaps you can Google them,

801, the last I heard it was about $100 to refill. I 've used D&M Restorations in Greenville, S.C. for about 15 years now and have always been pleased with Mikes work. His number is 800-722-0854 Terry will probably answer and if she does tell Alvin told you to call and I said to give you a stovebolt discount!!

On the other hand I think the Car & Truck Shop in Ca. sells the complete guage for about $50 with the capillary tube! Give them a call as well if your trying to save a few bucks.

801 curt has a '48 model. I looked at Jim CArter site just now and a "new" guage is $115. I did not see any rebuilt listed but not long ago when I looked it was $74 with a rebuildable core. I may be wrong..... I HATE the new catalog!

Ashton, how long has it been since you got one for $35? His new ones for a '40 is $120 but I did not see any rebuilt for the 40 either? Maybe I missed something?

it was in 08 or 09 i cant remember. it was a rebuild. if you go this way you need to send them back the gage face and the bulb that sits in the head to qualify for the lower price.

I talked with Jim Carter today they said as long as I specify when I send the part in that I do not want the face changed they will leave it the same. They also said it would cost me no more or less then the listed price of their "temperature sending units" $52.00
