I prefer to have any trans gone thru by a friend of mine who builds transmissions for towing/racing/etc. Cheep insurance

88 and newer have electronic speedos

I took out my 350 automatic. I'm running 400 horses. I put in a 700r4 and man, I've never been happier. First gear is lower and with a shift kit its been a killer...... so much so that just TONIGHT the rear end gave up the ghost. I shelled it and drifted into the yard! The shift kit has to go!!

You're learning about shift kits the hard way. If you simply shift up, never down, a shift kit is OK, I guess, but on several of the downshifts possible during normal driving, the shift timing is such that you're in two gears at once, momentarily. That locks up the rear end for a fraction of a second, and either breaks the spider gear pivot shaft, or wears out the carrier housing. I've seen carriers with the pivot shaft hole worn into a slot 1/4" long as a direct result of a shift kit being installed. There are better ways to beef up a transmission that don't involve screwing around with shift timing, but I'm sure all the self-appointed experts here will disagree with me.

How do you address the electronic speedo with a stock gauge?

get the electric speedometer drive for $300 (cable X - from Abbott industries) or replace the stock gauge and buy an electronic speedo for about $100

you dont need to spend $300 or even $100 to do this. oem parts are availiable if you look. use the mechanical speedo drive for an older 700r4 in the newer one. thats what i did when i put in a 1990 700r4 into my 1983 monte carlo
