I need some advise?
I want to put a large good sounding cam into a stock 283. I want to keep the stock valve train. And I'm keeping the 3 speed manual, and the 2 barrel carb if possible.
Any sugestions?

Don't even try. A cam is one link in a chain that starts at the air cleaner and ends at the tip of the tailpipe. A radical cam without all the other bits and pieces makes no sense. If you want a rough idle, disconnect a couple of spark plugs.

x-3 A big cam means it will require more gas and u state that u want to use the 2 ble carb. These guys are correct- it is not that easy. Many other engine parts involved. Change the mufflers if u just want sound. That's the cheapest and least "intrusive" thing u can do for a better sound. I've got a set of headers and "regular" muffers on my 283 and it sounds like a big block!! Well- almost.

You're not going to be able to do too much with a cam and stock valve train. You may be able to bump it up a notch or two with an RV cam or a mild cam, but that's it. Your money would be more wisely spent with a 4 barrel, headers, and glass packs if you'r looking for sound.

I think you have your answer, stick with the exhaust and mild improvements. I once purchased a 305 (only because I wanted the tranny bolted to it.) The young man I bought it from put a Performer 650, Edelbrock Torker II intake, headers, some radical cam, New HEI dist and all with stock bore and 2 bbl heads. It sounded good at a idle but would fall on its face. Hmmmm!

I agree no cam. My 283 is cammed and it is a PITA to set up right. Just stick with intake and exhaust and that little motor will do great

My truck I have a stock cam in the 350. It sounds good as i have Corvette manifolds and a flowmaster mufflers with the tail pipes running out back.

Just don't do like I did. When i was in high school I had a 327 in a camaro. It had a 3 speed,2 barrel and single exhaust. I quickly added headers,dual exhaust, large port and valve heads, big 4 barrel and i lost all the low end torque and gained hi end horsepower. A 2 barrel is fine. You only use the extra 2 barrels in a 4 barrel about 5% of the time. Contact any of the popular cam vendors. Let them know you set up and ask for something to help the low end torque and mileage. 283 are great engines and love to wind up which gives you your horsepower. Some vendors even just recommend different rocker arms with a larger ratio that increase air flow and low speed torque. Buck

Little engines only need small changes to improve flow. Just be careful and think small changes on a 283 and let it wind like they do so well.

I think you guys all missed his point.. "good sounding cam" is what he's after. Lots of those out there so why not get one. Sure it won't run any better w/o the rest of the stuff but all he want's to do is hear it. Same reason I have for wanting a Harley engine..not the motorcycle (had 9) but just the engine.. to start it up, listen to it for a minute, shut it off and go back in the house.
