Well my 64 has a rather bad oil leak, it looks to be coming from between the block and head, but is hard to tell, so i would assume a blown head gasket, but there isnt any oil in the coolant and no coolant in the oil which i thought would be a sign of a blown head gasket, can I still have a blown head gasket without these conditions? Well anyways Im going to replace the head gaskets, is this rather easy? is there a manual out there that would cover this. Im assuming its as easy as it looks, drain the oil, and coolant, take the valve covers off then the intake manifold, take the headers off, then im lost. any help would be apreciated. thanks in advance.

Make sure it isn't the oil sending unit or the rear of the intake, 2 more likely areas of leakage. Brian

its not coming from those, looking at again im pretty sure its coming from the head gasket.

WOW, working on a V-8! It's been awhile since I did this task, but I'm thinking you have to loosen the rocker arm adjusting nuts, swivel the rocker arms out of the way to reach some of the head bolts hidden between them. This also allows you to pull the pushrods out.

When you pull the intake you will have to pull the distributor too.

Do some extensive looking using Brake-Kleen and rags on your leak BEFORE you go nuts! As Brian points out above, this type of leak is very uncommon to be associated with a head gasket .

ill give the brake cleaner a shot and see if i can find out where its coming from, hopefully I can try tomorow beacuse the next 2 weeks will be full of 14 hour days (I love the Army). Thanks for the help though.

A very common leak point is the "S" shaped area at the rear of the intake manifold. There used to be a gasket for it but now it is common to use silicone to form a gasket.

Don,t pull those heads. It,s very unlikely thats where it,s leaking. Wash it down real good & look for the leak. Like the guys have posted, check the back of the intake, valve covers, oil sender, or even the dist gasket. If it,s comeing from the clutch/converter cover it could be a rear main seal.

I was hoping to find the leak today but central texas got hit real hard with rain, so I didnt get to it, but I will mention that the oil is coming from the pass. side towards the rear. most of the oil is below the header, but theres a little above it, it didnt leak as bad as it does now before I changed the oil, but now when its running it pours out, all of which lands on the collector then turning into smoke. thanks again for the help.

If you are talking V8 you most likly have a intake leak where intake,head and block all meet that in the corner,,you state leak is on pass side so check dist gskt also and don,t forget the valve cover...doc

Wow.Don't be in a hurry to pull the head.I'm agreeing with the others here.Keep cleaning and checking the intake.A vacum leak will suck a surprising amount of oil.The rubber gasket at the back of the intake,as allready mentioned will leak too.Pulling the intake is way easier.I can't see, in my mind,that amount of oil between the block and the head.
