I took the cable off and tried to turn the speedometer by hand and it is hard to turn. The cable is fine, the speedometer is hard to turn. What would be the best way to lubricate this, and what should I use. And if I'm in the wrong place here, let me know and I'll move it, or you can. I just wasn't sure where it would go. Thanks | | | | | Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 | you can put a cable end in and spin it with a drill motor, reverse will make it register forward, can't tell anything turning by hand .... it may be that there's enough wear to let the mechanism rattle around a bit, in which case you need another - not adviseable to use a lubricant in the speedo, it'll gum things up sooner rather than later, but if you take it apart you might clean out the 50 years of accumulated junk and find it works fine

Then it calmed back down and now works like new. To clean it, the instrument cluster comes out and then gets disassembled. Do it where you can keep track of all the tiny screws.

I'll pull it and see if I can clean it. But it may wait till these 100+ degree days are over. I just unhooked the cable to it for now. (Yep, I'm a wuss in the heat.)
I appreciate the suggestions. I can see where lubricants might cause problems down the road. Especially down our road which is dusty to say the least. | | |
