I've tried looking through the 16 pages of oil filter threads in the "search" function for info on different shapes of accessory oil filter cannisters without much luck. Here's the question...I'm looking at an alleged 1953 GMC oil filter cannister..it is longer and narrower than the AD oil filters I've seen before. I did notice in one of my manuals that early 216's had (42-46) had what appeared to be long narrow cannisters. Were two shapes of cannister available from GM/Chevy ?

In 1954, Chevrolet trucks had two GM (AC) accessory oil filters, 1 quart and 2 quart. In 1949/50 there was one oil filter available, 2.5 quart capacity.

GMC also had two oil filters, a "short" one on most trucks, and a "long" one for heavy duty trucks and busses.

That filter style was a GM accessory (Chevrolet truck, at least) through 1954 (or 55-1st series. I would also like to find one. Am I correct in thinking that it had two flat straps around it?

This is my oil filter canister on my 1952 GMC 228 motor.

It is approx 7 inches tall, 4 1/2 inches in diameter and about 14 inches in circumference.

I realize any motor could have been in the ebay GMC, but if it had its original motor it would be the 228. Check out the top of this page which shows what GMC engines were offered in what models in what years. The 1953 1/2 ton model would be the 101-22.

I also looked at the right side of a 248 in my GMC maintenance manual and the 248 filter is shorter and mounted higher and more mid engine. Definitely looks different than a 228 filter.

I think the ebay filter looks a lot like mine and probably came from a 228 GMC motor.

Does it also fit other motors? Don't know.

The ebay seller mentioning the 216 and the 235 could mean, as Tim alluded to, that he is one more person who doesn't know that GMC had their own line of engines during this period.

Tim...It appears to have two straps and also it appears to be firewall mounted. I'm on the trail of two of them...I'll let you know.

I just obtained one of these filters that was attached to a 216 out of a 52 pickup. It has flanges on the back of the housing and uses 2 "U" type clamps which mount it to the intake manifold. I don't know how to post a picture here but can send you one if you wish. Fred
