on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: May 2011 Posts: 15 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: May 2011 Posts: 15 | I have a 48 Chevy PU. I am not sure what engine is in it. I was told it has a 235 and it's not the original engine. I need to make sure. I tried researching it but I'm still not certain.
The valve cover has 4 screws, two on each side of it holding it down.
The numbers just above the starter on the block say: 072I589F54Z but these numbers don't seem to correspond to anything meaningful.
Can anybody steer me in the right direction?

So this engine has apparently matched well with drive train setup for a truck all this time. How do you know it is a 235 engine? I can't tell exactly from the information.

Some had hydraulic lifters (Powerglide equipped) and some had mechanical lifters (as did the truck 235). 216/235/261 engines are fairly easily interchangeable over all the years (37-63). Some modifications have to made when 55 and later engines are put into earlier trucks. Depending on the years, some modifications have to made to the motor mounts. 216/235/261 all have the same bolt pattern for attaching any year clutch housing or automatic transmission. | | |
