I have a 48 Chevy PU. I am not sure what engine is in it. I was told it has a 235 and it's not the original engine. I need to make sure. I tried researching it but I'm still not certain.

The valve cover has 4 screws, two on each side of it holding it down.

The numbers just above the starter on the block say:
072I589F54Z but these numbers don't seem to correspond to anything meaningful.

Can anybody steer me in the right direction?

It's a 1954 235 "regular" engine built in Flint, MI and used in a car (manual transmission and mechanical lifters).

This truck has the 4 speed w/granny gear in it. So this engine has apparently matched well with drive train setup for a truck all this time. How do you know it is a 235 engine? I can't tell exactly from the information.

All 1954 car engines were 235s. Some had hydraulic lifters (Powerglide equipped) and some had mechanical lifters (as did the truck 235).

216/235/261 engines are fairly easily interchangeable over all the years (37-63). Some modifications have to made when 55 and later engines are put into earlier trucks. Depending on the years, some modifications have to made to the motor mounts. 216/235/261 all have the same bolt pattern for attaching any year clutch housing or automatic transmission.
