Then, after reinstalling the tank and sending unit, I reconnected the battery cable. Now, the only guages that work are the mechanical ones, speedo and oil pressure. The temp, amp, and gas guages have stopped working. What do these guages have in common that could have stopped working all at the same time? Does anyone have any ideas about where should I start looking to correct this?

It's very easy to knock them loose when working under the dash. I've done it many times myself on the '55.

Is it possible you jiggled the terminal on the starter solenoid which in past was used as common point (source?) for all the hots? Corroded lug that got jiggled and gave up? Maybe checking any connection one connection away from battery may find your problem.
