If I open the hood and manually pull the linkage to a different position it works for a while but I need a more permanent fix. My shift lever seems loose. Is there a way I can tighten things up and have more reliable shifting? | | | | | Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 | that's a very common problem on these old trucks - for starters, open up the shift box on the column where you jack around the linkage, clean and re-grease it and see that the spring in there isn't broken - make sure the connections of the rods to the levers on the box aren't sloppy, might need to replace the bushings there [and at the trans] - check your shop manual for adjustment of the shifter up top Bill | | | | | Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 22 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 22 | Thanks,Bill. I had replaced bushings on levers but not underneath at the transmission - couldn't figure out where they went so didn't mess with it. Nor did I check the shifter spring, so I have a good Idea where to start.
