Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2010 Posts: 368 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2010 Posts: 368 | Members: Just replaced all my brake componets and about to replace all the brake lines...my question is...Now that the entire system is dry( Except Master Cylinder )...how do I fill the brake lines and wheel cylinders?
Will the lines fill all the way to the wheels by just adding brake fluid? Then bleed? Any help would be great,Also, should I drain the Master so that all fluid is clean and new. What type of Brake fluid should I use and about how much for a new and dry system. All Stock Drums. Open one of the bleeders on a caliper (the furthest away from the master), and go have a cup of coffee. Come back and see if it is dripping out of th eopen wheel cylinder. If it is, close it and move on to the next wheel cylinder. Keep checking that the master does not go dry. Once all wheel cylinders have been wet, go around and do it again, but watch as you do it. After that, do a regular bleed with someone on the brakes. It will pump up in no time. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | If you have done all that I would surely put a kit in the master cyl. Builders method wont work with the master cyl. under the floor.Gravity bleeding works great on firewall mounted master cyl. If you are not going to service the MC remove the fluid from the reservoir & fill with DOT3 or 4 fluid. If the master cyl didn't go dry you can go ahead & bleed the brakes in the normal manner. If you worked on it bench bleed it before you put it on & then bleed the system. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. The Master still has fluid in it and the old brake lines are still attached. When I remove the old brake lines do I have to drain the Master & Bench bleed...or can I just fill and bleed till fluid runs clean...Use which Dot fluid ? Who knows when it was last rebuilt. It may pop one of those old cups next week. I'd rebuild it too. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 576 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 576 | I have to agree with Cletis on this one...I'd say use dot 3 fluid...you'll probly use at least a quart maybe a little more.thats whayt i used anyway....dave 1949 Chevrolet 3100 "When this thing hits 88 miles an hour, you're going to see some serious sh%t." -Doc Brown
