I am considering shoe horning an S10 2.8 or 4.3 with a manual tranny into my 50 3/4 ton Chevy. How well does it fit? What problems will I have? How does the driveshaft / rearend adaption work out? New gauges suggestions? Any other modern engines (straight sixes) that work better?

Just curious, why? It is much more simple to use what is supposed to go there. I would understand the v-8 thing for easy substantial power. But these old inlines are just as good and better than the engines you speak of IMO. I have a 4.3 in my Safari. I have a 235 in my 62 C-10. The 235 gets way better mileage, and the truck would beat the van in a drag race. It won't even be close when I finish my zoomed up 261. The gearing and radials are the key to how it runs and handles, especially on the freeway. Just my .02. BTW, any relation to Frank an Lena Day from Sheridan? My family (Madia)on my Dad's side is from there. My Grandmas maiden name was Jean Day.

I'd think the big issue is using ANY smog motor expecially that puny V6. I'd stick with any inline or jump to the V8.
Just my 2 cents.

The 2.8 was pretty puny even in the S-10's, especially the carbureted models. Fuel injection helped the reliability a little, and improved the power somewhat, but a good 250, or even a 230 would probably outperform it.

The 4.3 will have the same width problems around the steering gear as a V-8, as it's just a 350 with a couple of cylinders lopped off. Good engine, pretty good power, but it's a gas guzzler.
