building a 40 1/2 ton street rod.. recently purchased a set of buckets from a p t crusier.. mistake.. to plush too thick set to high pushes me to forward.. what has someone used that works well I am 6'3 and know in the cab I will be a little cramped.But would like some leg room. Help!!

I feel for ya! I used stock seat / added foam and recovered. Even that puts my knees up under the wheel and I am only 5'9 !
I have read that '90's Ranger bench seat will fit width wise. Not sure about buckets.

I have been looking at everything out there to find something that will fit and look good - not out of place. So far I have found only one thing from Glide Engineering, but high dollar!! Looks like the stock seat is still the best choice.

Check a third row seat out of a Dodge Caravan, Plymouth Voyager Etc. I found one at Pull-A-Part for 38 bucks complete with seat belts. It's 46 inches wide and fits in the cab nicely. I haven't fabed it in yet just set it atop the fuel tank pedestal. I was lucky to find one in vinyl but it's maroon and recovering it will still be cheaper then the glide.

I found a nice set of late Model S-10 seats at a swap meet,they work out very good in my 55 2nd series.Not buckets,but a split set of seats. I measured the distance between the doors and used that as a basis for seat width.By the way I am 6,2 and weigh well over 200 lbs.I went to my local hardwood dealer and got a couple of 4x4 pieces of maple to make risers out of.

thanks for the info... a 40 I believe has a smaller cab than say a 47 and up ..I think, am I right or wrong??? What may work in a 47 ad and up maay not work the same in a 40??am I right??

i used the buckets out of a 94-97 Pontiac Grand Am in my 46. Fit real nice and price was right.

Im with Gmans (Chrysler), except I think mine was the second row seat. Fit perfect and the leather was in exceptional condition. I made my own mounting brackets to lower it a bit but no matter what you will be cramped. I seem to be right on the steering wheel and I left foot brake. Couldnt imagine having to use a clutch. Was every body 5'2" in 1940?

went to clunkers yard today any seat you want for 50.00.. many to choose from but not knowing what will work is a problem dakota bench .looked possible,nissan pick up? third seat from a Quest I think , but it seemed a little straight up in the back..oh well it aint exactly wall mart where if it dont fit I can return it.

My '40 cab is pretty narrow - not sure if same thru '46. For sure, 47 & up is quite a bit wider.

tried a 68 camaro seat today..work best yet...got some 65 mustang seats tonite will try them tomorrow..getting close..Any one know cost of recovering seats??

mustang seats work great..short enough to set back. feels prety comfy considering I'm 6'3 ( on a good day.)

as far as covering i am sure there are kits out there especially for the mustangs. maybe at original parts group. ron

Yesterday I scrapped out a first generation S-10 (93) and pulled the tracks off the bench seat. It measured 50-1/2" and fit nicely into my 38. I am also going to try a set of miata buckets I have kicking around. They have a thin back which I believe is key in making room.

I took a few pics of an original seat and the caravan seat. I'm 5'11" and it feels good to me.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but those of you who have swapped out the stock seat for a newer model bench seat, did you mount the seat on top of the gas tank box, or have you moved the tank elsewhere and mounted the seat to the floor?

I've got a 1940 also. My stock seat is in perfect condition, but I want to swap it out for something else. Leg room is not an issue really, but I always feel like I'm sitting up way to high. I need to come down at least 3 inches. I'm 6'2" and it's bad on my back also, very uncomfortable.

My seat actually slides onto guides mounted on top of the tank box, which I assume is the factory setup.

One of the things I plan to do this summer is get the tank out of the cab. I should then have a lot more seat options. This way I can mount the seat directly to the floor.

I have plenty of pic a parts near me, so finding something shouldn't be too difficult. I'd rather a bench over buckets for some reason, but it's gonna have to be very small/thin because the cab is so small. I'll look into the Chrysler van and Ranger seats. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

I picked up a 95 Caravan seat. Sucker is HEAVY! Anyway, it has those quick release claws on the bottom. I guess I will have to cut those off. Does anyone have any pics that show how they made the mounts?

Rear brackets made using 1/8" thick 2" angle iron from Lowes. Stuck to floor using industrial grade polyurethane glue. I chose to cut the front claws off to lower the front for more thigh room between seat and steering wheel.

its the center seat (seat behind the drivers seat) that works in the truck, i have one in my 46, just have to cut the legs and fab it in

i am 6'2 havn't made the actual brakets for them but i got some seats out of a mid 70s camero and mocked up a wood base they so far seem to work fine in my 37 with plenty of room, secret i have found... go with lowbacks "no headrest"
