My truck did not come with overdrive originally.I don't have all the hardware to make it like stock, but don't really care. I just want it to work. Can I wire the trans locking the overdrive in the "on" position all the time and put a switch in the 12V power to the solinoid for use to engage the OD? Will this work? Is there a better way?

I installed a relay on the firewall to handle the power to the transmission relay. I then installed a switch between the ground on the firewall relay and the govener. This switch allows you to turn power off to the relay. With the power switch on, the transmission relay will activate at about 28mph through the govener. You can also turn it off if needed. The dash switch also can be used as a kick down switch. When in over drive and you want to pass a car just trun off the switch and let off of the gas and you are in direct drive.
I then went to NAPA and got a heavy duty locking type throttle cable. I hooked the cable to the transmission lever to be able to disenguage the overdrive when nessary. Attach the outher end of the cable under the dash.
You are probably confused by now so I'll stop.

I used a 40 amp headlamp relay (Standard-Bluestreak part # LR-32) and a Chelsea pto cable to operate it. So far, I've never had to go so far as to need to activate the KD, those 235s have so much torque that I haven't needed it to pass anyone.

I didn't use a relay with mine. Just a heavy duty switch on the dash to energize the solenoid. Drove it like that for 12 years with no problems. | | |

I put a passenger car o.d in my dad's 66 pickup and bypassed the governor with a hot wire from the switch on the dash to the solenoid. Worked like a charm, the guy that bought the truck died,his son still has it and the o.d. still works fine just as I wired it in 1966. | | |
