these units filtered very little oil and thus would have a very limited affect in keeping the oil clean. Can this limited flow oil filter be converted to a full flow, and how could it be done? Further, should I even consider changing it or leave well enough alone? Thanks for the help.

The by-pass oil filters work fine. They may only filter a small % of the flow, but all of the oil eventually goes through the filter and gets cleaned.
Someone else will have to comment on changing a 216 to allow a full flow oil filter.

Converting a 216 to full flow would be a big job, involving some very creative machining. Untold numbers of these engines ran millions of miles with the oil system it was designed to use- - - -why second-guess something that works because of the ridiculous rumor that the filtering is ineffective?

It now has over 100,000 miles on it and going strong. If there were oiling issues I would have detected it by now. I use a high grade 10-30 motor oil with no other additives. I'm going to pull the head to take a look at the upper end soon. I did replace all the valves and seats when I built it up. I'm using a 248 GMC rocker assembly that I had the towers machined down to the length of the stock Chevy towers. That is still functioning well. I have an HEI unit on it and also a dual intake with heat and Carter/Webers from Stovebolt and cast iron headers.
