I want to change my gears in my rear end to see if I can get a little more go...What do you all suggest?

Holcomb: Depends on what you mean by "a little more go". Are you looking for more top end? better acceleration.....? And, are you running a V-8, 235, 216, and then there's the trans, is it the stock 3-speed, 4-speed, overdrive, auto???? Do you know what ratio your rear gear is now? All of these things will play into the mix in determining what you want to do with your rear end gearing.

I'm running a 216, 4 speed...now at 55 it seems like it is running very hard just keep that speed..the rpms are high...it has the stock gears in the back. I thought maybe changing the gears in the rear end would solve that...

You can get 3.55 gears from most of the parts suppliers for these old trucks. It will make 65 or so comfortable.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

You might want to buy the installation kit when you buy the ring and pinion gear. It contains the bushing, bearings, seals, and gaskets that will most likely be required.

After I installed my O.D., 65 was easily obtainable at pretty low RPMs but was still not "comfortable" due to the split rims and skinny tube-type tires. At 65 my knckles were white and the truck was all over the road. When I switched to radials the ride and handling at 65 was what I dreamed it could be.

Holcomb; The 3:55 gear set that Patrick's sell sounds right down your alley. It should allow you to cruise at 65 with ease. Good luck.

Consider a brake upgrade if you plan on going 65!

Thanks again guys...I will check out 3:55 gears. Anybody know where to buy those? Is it a specific brand name I should look for?

Patrick\'s

Give them a call and they'll send needed parts right out. Most of the "Catalog" stores order these kits from Patrick's. Also, I agree that you should go ahead and purchase the whole rebuild kit rather than just the gears - do it right the first time, unless there's time to do it again.
