Hit your local auto parts store and see what they can do for you. Around here, they act like someone superglued their elbows to the counter when I mention needing parts for a 54 model. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 1,636 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 1,636 | Could also be the drive itself is slipping inside since you say the teeth are okay. Wouldn't take much grinding to show up on the teeth. But when the drive slips inside it can sound like it is grinding. | | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,438 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,438 | Greg, the drives on a mechanical engage starter won't interchange between 6 and 12V starters. Do you know they will on these starters?
Bastieri, according to my Hollander manual, a '49-'55 truck starter can be used by switching the drive housing and installing the solenoid.

I just thought that there was a chance that the tooth count was the only real difference other than the armature but it makes sense that the armatures could have different shaft diameteres which would make the drives not interchangable. Thanks for the other interchange info though. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,101 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,101 | Hy Bastieri and guys, the o.e.m. p/n for the automatic starter in 1954/55A series is 1814232, all six volt starters from 1941 - 55 use the same starter drive, according to my parts book. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 7 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 7 | OK, I need to put the word out that I need to buy this. The starter is different size than others made for the same trucks with manual transmissions. I know, I had to shop for one a few years back. Took me six months to find a complete working starter.
