what starter motor is for a 54 chevy hydra-matic? Mine grinds teeth on a perfect flywheel, must be wrong. - Anthony

Your starter may be ok but have the incorrect starter drive in it. Hit your local auto parts store and see what they can do for you. Around here, they act like someone superglued their elbows to the counter when I mention needing parts for a 54 model.

Could also be the drive itself is slipping inside since you say the teeth are okay. Wouldn't take much grinding to show up on the teeth. But when the drive slips inside it can sound like it is grinding.

Greg, the drives on a mechanical engage starter won't interchange between 6 and 12V starters. Do you know they will on these starters?

Bastieri, according to my Hollander manual, a '49-'55 truck starter can be used by switching the drive housing and installing the solenoid.

Cletis, I don't know that. I just thought that there was a chance that the tooth count was the only real difference other than the armature but it makes sense that the armatures could have different shaft diameteres which would make the drives not interchangable. Thanks for the other interchange info though.

Hy Bastieri and guys, the o.e.m. p/n for the automatic starter in 1954/55A series is 1814232, all six volt starters from 1941 - 55 use the same starter drive, according to my parts book.

OK, I need to put the word out that I need to buy this. Anyone using one as a door stop?

Finding one of these starters (complete) for the 54 Hydra-matic is like finding a needle in a haystack. The starter is different size than others made for the same trucks with manual transmissions. I know, I had to shop for one a few years back. Took me six months to find a complete working starter.

Hey, just wondering if you ever found a extra starter for the hydra-matic. I am again looking. Thinking that you may have found a source and know where one might be available. Ted
