When looking for a replacement for my Carter YF I found a Single Barrel Holley at a local parts store. It had a wider spacing, although I couldn't tell you how much wider.

In the end I got the Carter rebuilt.

2100s, as built by Carter, IS a size 3. Sounds like yours has been subjected to "hanky-panky".

Jon.

Good carburetion is fuelish hot air
The most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify.

thanks 39az , i have a buddy in sunny tucson .

thanks carbking - also for your time in talking to me ! i appreciate it .

32fire2 about 1/4 inch difference - that would be a lot of filing on the mount . & then there's the carb throat - i don't think it is thick enough for that . & thanks . frank

The manual choke carbs are a lot tougher to find than the auto choke carbs. I believe this to be because of those using dual and triple carbs want the manual choke versions.

If you don't mind an automatic choke (I don't personally like them myself); it is relatively easy to install an automatic choke carb replacing a manual choke. The only issue is the heat for the choke. That may be provided as follows:

1) acquire a piece of roughly 18 gauge sheet metal 6 inches by 3 inches

2) cut a 1/2 inch square from each corner

3) bend the 4 sides, making a rectangular "cup" of depth 1/2 inch

4) drill a hole in the center of the cup and install a brass fitting

5) install the cup on the exhaust manifold with the open end toward the manifold

6) bend a piece of tubing to attach to the brass fitting and the carburetor choke

Jon.

The difference between a #2 and #3 is more than just the spacing of the studs. The bottom "bore" size is also different (I also just received a #2 "YF2100" from Jim Carter).

Carbking, would there be a performance (horsepower, gas mileage) different between these two carbs on the same 235 in a 3100?

Dave

Frank,

When I was looking to find a replacement, I found alleged NOS Carter YFs online for about $240.00 a piece. It may be worth doing a search and asking on the stud spacing.

In general, single barrel carbs are very difficult to find these days. I even went to the local speed shop and they couldn't get anything less than a 2bbl.

Again, I found a Holley that might work out through a local Autozone. It was too wide for my stud spacing.

Good luck. I am, for obvious reasons, a bit biased when it comes to 39 trucks.
