The 3 on-the-tree shifter doesn't engage anything in the forward-backward neutral position. It appears to only go into 2 and 3, no R or 1. Where should I start looking for the problem? It seems like it is probably something not engaging inside the steering column or maybe something broken on the shift lever. Any suggestions on where to start? Hopefully I can get it in the garage this weekend to melt the snow and see if I can get her moving down the road (after the snow/salt season, of course).

One of the levers should move up and down while shifting, then have them shift between R and 1, the other lever should move up and down. If it moves, then look underneath where the rods attach to the levers on the trans and go through the same procedure. If you see movement there, the problem is inside the tranny, possibly a broken shifter fork. | | |
