Hello, bought a '50 5-window 3100, vin number makes sense (6HPGxxxxx). Person I bought the truck from is a dealer and will send me the title once the lost title process is complete from another state (Oregon). I just got the title and the vin numbers don't match, the dealer isn't helpful at this point. The plate # on the reg/title matches the license plate on the truck, however the vin # makes no sense (ORE15454F). I suppose the first digit could be a zero. I find it suspicious that the ORE also looks a lot like OREgon. Any ideas if this could be an engine number or anything else it may be? Lastly, and unfortunately, the year on the title is a 1948 while vin plate # is a 1950. I suspect I have a random title with no link to the truck I bought. Thoughts? Thx.

i have a 51' p/u and my wife has a 50' sedan. both of the titles' vin #'s start with 3 letters. like you stated, it more than likely is the state that it was manufactured in. as far as the vins not matching- i don't know. there are alot of shady dealers out there. -DVZ

I don't know about the state of Or. but most of the time back then the number on the motor was used on the title as the Vin#.

I would contact ur state license dept., DMV, or what ever they call it in your state and ask them what needs to be done to straighten out the situation.

When I titled my truck I asked that the Vin # be changed from motor number to Vin # from the plate on the cab.
That required a persomal inspection to verify but I got it done.

You can search your door post Data Plate number here...click...
Type in that 6HPG number should come up with a manufacture date.

Also, how is the Data plate held on the door post? modern pop rivets, clutch head screws. Philips head screws?

This might tell you if the Data Plate has been changed.

At some point in your trucks history a state may have issued a vin number. That could explain the number on the title. Inspect your frame. There could be a plate or sticker attached by the state somewhere.

Check your cab mounts, if you have two rear cab mounts (shackles) its a 50, if you have 1 rear cab mount in the center it’s a not. (I’m not 100% positive about that test)

What size engine is in your truck?

Look on the boss beside the distributor and see if it's stamped there. You might have to scrape some crud to see it.

Just "my opinion". The guy who requested the lost title evidently gave them the wrong year.... .and the number with the "or" in it is a state issued number from Oregon. But its just my opinion and I do not know Oregons state laws.

Please keep us posted as to how this works out....or if you just let it be.

Is the dealer in CT near you? I would think he would become helpful if you suggest that you'll mention to your DMV / State Police that someone with a dealer license is selling vehicles with titles that don't match.

Spoke with DMV in Oregon, the "VIN" number on the title was assigned by the state 50+ years ago so it won't match any numbers on the truck.

Most likely the person at the Oregon DMV does not know (and does not care) what they did 50 years ago.

I have an "OREGON VEHICLE CERTIFICATE OF TITLE" for a 1954 Chevrolet 1/2 ton pickup. The "VIN" on that title is H 54 O 005877, which matches the vehicle serial number on the door-post ID plate.

As most of us know there was no standardized "VIN" prior to 1981. And, for some reason, many states have no computerized vehicle records prior to 1972.

Buy yourself an aftermarket data plate, stamp the number on your title on it and put it on your truck. Good to go.
