smile I'm new here and have just acquired a 1966 C60 flatbed 292 4 speed.
I'm looking for basic info such as 1 ton, 2 ton, parts sources and general info sites or books.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jim

Truckman,

Welcome to the Stovebolt site.

I am one of the few on this site with a 1966 C60. They are darn good trucks but thay are not without some "opportunities to be successful".

They are a 2 ton truck depending on the front and rear axle combo. Mine has a 15000lb two speed rear driven by an SM420 4 speed tranny and the 292 six cylinder. The GVW on mine is 19200.

The biggest gotcha on this model with the 15000lb rear axle is the self adjusting rear brakes. Parts are very hard to find for this "experiment gone bad" that is unique to the '66 model year. Other than the brakes, you can find all the parts on the shelf at your local Napa store. The cab is the same as the 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks except for the front doghouse.

This site is the best source of information. There are some real knowledgeable folks that visit hear.

Buy yourself a reprinted copy of the 1963 service manual and the 1966 supplement to it.

Holler when you need help. We will all jump in when we can.

I have a '66 C-60,also with a 292/4 speed, single speed rear. Mine shows a 19,000 pound GVW too.I found out a power steering set up from a C-60 up to the mid 70's will work on a '66 but requires a bracket to be made,to mount the axle-end of the ram to the axle, and the linkage from the spindle to the steering box will need to be shortened an inch or so,to allow the steering box to center.
I had to replace my steering box,the bearings came out in about 90 pieces, many were half-ballbearings-no wonder the steering kept locking up.
Also, get an electronic ignition from a newer 292 and swap it in.you'll be amazed how much better it'll run,and it'll make the plugs last longer too. On the down side, don't plan on going anywhere fast in it. I don't know what redline is on a 292,but at 3,000 rpm, mine goes about 45 mph. BTW-there are 2 water pumps available for the 292;one will work with the dual belt pulleys, the other won't.Different shaft lengths.
I found out "MAD Electrical.com" has a LOT of info on making your electrics work right.
Have fun!

After rebuilding my 292 I can tach to about 3800 without strain. I have had it to 4200 in a pinch but would not make a habit of it. My 54 6100 speedo is caput so I don't know how fast that might be but given all the evidence I would say about 60. Jim

I can't believe I found someone with a truck just like mine!!! I have the same, a 66' c-60 flatbed with a 292 4speed. I am not sure about the rearend. I have several questions to ask if you don't mind. First, It overheats alot, and the only thing I changed was the distriutor,I went to HEI. I can't get the carb set with the timing. I am not sure where to set the timing cause I am not sure what year the motor is.Does it matter what year it is? I hope I didn't scare you with all of this. Thanks for your help. Jeff

For a year now I Too have owned a 1966 c_60. 2speed axle. As for the engine there was a 350 chevy I pulled out not sure what was in it before the truck is a wrecker/hauler it will carry a car above the cab one on the back truck bed is powered by two large hydro cylinders you can also insert the stinger and tow a car aswell truck has big winch driven by pto off the motor/trans. Any help would be great I have never found another one like it online! [email protected]

Welcome to the site David.

You sure found an old thread there ('05).

Nice looking truck. I'm curious to what the GVW is it. If you plan to haul 3 at a time you need to make sure that you are not overloaded, legally.

Let us know in detail how we can help you with it.

Bill

Is this something I should have to worry about on my 1964-1966 School Bus Chassis with a 327 v8? I too am planning on going through the brake system in a couple of weeks and I am trying to order parts by middle of this week so they'll be here. I know pretty much everything will need replacing, so switching to a different brake system is ok with me too if that is possible. I just need some help ordering the right parts. With the "truck" being 3 hours away that makes things difficult.

Spanky, what all do you know about these trucks (mine is a Bus chassis with a 327 v8)......specifically the tuneup parts, and the brake parts.
