I'm curious if anyone here has used a product called AT-205 Re-Seal to stop engine or tranny leaks?

As some might know, the '55 recently had it's engine rebuilt and while that went incredibly well and the engine is now better than new, the old rope seal isn't and a leak persists...

I am told there is no newer "modern day" replacement seal available for the 265 so my choices seem rather limited... either put up with the leak OR find a product that will stop it.

Everything I have read in consumer reviews for this product are good (apparently it swells existing seals, even rope seals to stop leaks in engine, transmission, differential or even power steering) but if someone here has used AT-205 I'd prefer to hear it directly from them and how it worked for their engine leaks...

Thanks in advance for your responses...

Personally I have never heard of anything that makes a rope seal swell. Best Gasket makes a seal from a new material and it seems to be working for people.

Do you know the rear seal size? I have built a lot of Pontiac engine and they all use a rope seal. Everything has been tried on them since the asbestos was removed from the rope 10 or so years ago. The new stuff just falls apart and is not worth the time or effert to put it in.

This just came out and really works good, so good infact, I had to replace one because it was so tight it would lock the engine solid after heating up. The second one was installed looser and has been working great for a year now.

It comes in two sizes so maybe one of them would fit your engine. The Stanley Steamer I worked on used a lot if this type of seal only smaller diameters. Most of what I used can from England, steam cars are very popular over there. Do a search for rope packing material, you just might find something that works.

That seal is a Best Gasket seal, as I had mentioned. They are made of a tough modern material.

This guy can probably sell you an NOS seal if you prefer:

I have bought gaskets and seal from him and he also sells Best gaskets. I have an NOS seal in my 216 that I bought from him. It doesn't leak at all.

Thanks for the alternative ideas, guys... we'll have to get 3B in here so he can take a look at them...

I had no idea they were making replacements for rope seals... in fact I had heard I was stuck with them since nothing new had been made to replace it... this is good news assuming it's not TOO hard to replace... thanks for the info... I look forward to hearing more of your ideas so thanks again... smile

I have no idea what size the seal is, Joe... it's just a standard 265 engine in my '55 Bel Air so probably nothing that exotic...

I'll try to track down the info on the seal size and check out the links here to see if anyone makes a replacement...

It would be so nice to get rid of the leak, especially since the engine was rebuilt so well and runs and looks so good now... if I could get rid of that fly in the ointment I'd be a happy guy! smile
