For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 111 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 111 | My wiring was completely shot on my '48, so I am starting from scratch. Keep in mind it has a foot starter. While trying to re-wire the ignition switch, I used a tester to try to determine which terminal was which. But as I was testing, the only time I get a signal thru the switch is when I turn the thumb lever counter-clockwise. Isn't the conventional direction for an ignition switch clockwise? When I turn it clockwise the signal stops! Also, I bought a couple of ballast resisitors, 1 for the ignition and 1 for the heater blower. They are 2 different brands. 1 reduces voltage to about 9 vt. The other shows 12 volts across both terminals. What am I missing? | | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 2,201 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 2,201 | do you have the two position or three position switch? Mine is three position and two of them is off. the one in the middle is on.

A ballast resistor is needed between the ignition and the coil. Other types of resistors (not ballast resistors, which usually reduce 12v to about 9v) will be needed with other 6v devices. http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/12_volt_conversion.html | | | | | Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 111 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 111 | Switch is 3 position, 3 terminal . No matter which terminal I use as hot, the other two are only hot when I turn the switch to the left. I am just afraid that I might inadvertantly leave the switch turned to the left when the truck is not running, and consequently burn up the points.
I have converted the system to 12 volts. I will now look for a voltage reducer for the blower. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 256 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 256 | Not to hi jack your thread but im working on a 1949 suburban its already been converted to 12v and has the original 216 with the key on then push the foot starter i am going to swap that out with a 292 and note sure if my key on the foot starter switch will work on that set up so if it doesnt what ignition switch do i need to get that i can put in the dash and have it key on key start??
