I'm setting the 350/350 in my 38 today Doesn't the carburetor want to be level ?

These old bolts are in my blood. Hard thing is focusing on just one.

Yes.
The carb base should be lever. This will put the rear of the engine down just a bit.

i thought the u joints were the main reason to get it level. the 292 i set up is 5 deg off level. not ideal but i wasn't going to to the mods to the get it straight. it 2 driveshafts so i hope it will be ok at less than 2 deg each. the carb angle doesn't seem to bother it. it runs well going uphill too so i wasn't worried about that.

I suppose having the carb reasonably level is a good idea...
But the critical part is the U-joint angles.
Here's a driveline setup tech tip with some good links.

Likely you can have both a level carb (if it matters) and correct driveline angles, but no question about it I'd favor the correct driveline angles.

True - you can level the carb with an angled base plate (sort of an adapter milled at a shallow angle).

Most engines will have about a 3* angle down on the tail shaft when the carb base is level. Set the diff with the same angle up and you are right on for the d-shaft.

Just a thought, go to fuel injection and then you will only have to worry about the angle on the u-joints. Fuel injection doesn't care about engine angle.

Fuel injection costs a lot more money and I already have a carbureted engine.Besides blowers are more fun!
