Being an open driveline,the same concept applies,but it's a lot easier. All you need to do is chock the right wheel,jack up and block the left rear wheel,leave the truck in neutral and mark the driveline,the inside of the tire and the brake backing plate. Now,turn the driveline and count the number of revolutions the driveline makes for a full revolution of the tire. That's your gear ratio.

The differential gearing doubles wheel speed, if only one wheel is turning. The gear ratio needs to be figured with 1/2 turn of a rear wheel, if you've only got one wheel free to turn. That's why it's so easy to overheat a tire if it's spinning on a slick spot. 30 MPH on the speedo, for instance, is 60 at the wheel that's spinning.

Doubling the speed means more turning of the wheel for each driveshaft revolution, not less. So for a wheel to turn twice as fast, it must travel twice as far, or two revolutions. | | |
