I've been looking at this Tailgate Cable Retractor, made for Chevy Nomads. You can find them on eBay for $48 ... Classic Chevy sells them for $56.

You can see here (check out the PDF Documentation Tab):

Mike's sells 'em for $48:

Has anyone done this?

Where would you mount it? It seems like it would have to be an encroachment for things to catch on. Otherwise, seems like a cool idea

Hi Alan. You are aware of course that this part is meant to be inside the rear gate and unseen. On a pickup it would be visible unless some extensive modifications were made. There is an attachment part used in the door frame. This thing is like a tape measure and is not a lift part.

How are things going? Hope ll is well with you. We are safe and sound and now settled in MO and semi-retired here on out little farm.

Yeah ... I'm having second thoughts about this now.

Does anyone know of any brilliant tail gate solutions? I certainly don't want chains ... and my truck is a Street Rod, so I'm not concerned about original.

I don't think they rattle at all unless they get quite worn, just like the later years where they were the factory setup

Cool. They do seem to be the best solution so far.
