I'm trying to prep the steering wheel for the painter and need to fill and repair two cracks. New one cost $225.00 I'd like to repair this one. I searched the forums and came up with everything BUT steering wheel repairs.
Can a few of you give me some pointers. I'm searing the parts houses for the epoxy filler.
I used an epoxy meant for repairing plastic bumpers on cars. My brand is Dynatron. Like JB Weld with some flex, & sets up much quicker. I vee'd the crack using a Dremel, used my finger to smash the epoxy down into the groove. Sand, prime, sand, wet sand, paint.
pick up the feb 2011 issue of Streetrodder magazine, theres a good step by step article (page 152)of steering wheel restoration, they use a product called PC-7 A&B an epoxy for crack repairs.
I have tried this twice and found that the application of the epoxy is very important. The first time I did it, I left extra epoxy, figuring I would sand it even. I am sure this is obvious to the experts, but when you sand two materials that are of different hardness you will run into difficulty. The epoxy resists sanding but the relatively soft hard rubber gets removed easily. You end up with "humps" of epoxy. The second time I tried this, I used a razor blade to level the epoxy, so little sanding would be required. This worked much better. Kent
I read somewhere here I think about JB weld putty. Not the 2 part tubes red cap and black cap you squeeze out but a putty with both parts resin and hardener in a plastic tube. I found it at advance auto. You slice the putty like cutting butter and mix the two. Then spread on the wheel and allow to harden. Then I sanded to shape and that was it. It has been on the wheel for over a year.
