I am installing a 350 in my 54 pickup. I want to install a 4-speed, floor shift manual transmission. I envision using the truck as a daily driver; likely not hauling anything too large/heavy.

Does anyone have any tranny recommendations? Are there other variables I should be considering?

Thanks. Bob

Not without your rearend ratio. I assume you will be changing rears to an open drive rear to make this work. Transmissions of choice may be determined by therear gears you end up using.

An A833 would be high on my list if the rear gears were between 3.73 and 4.11.

A Muncie m21, m22, or a saginaw 4 speed or even a warner T10 would be on the list if the gears were 2.73- 3.23.

This has been discussed at length many times before. Do a search on the subject of rear gears and you will find more information than you could ever want.

I have a Munci m21 in mine but thought the T5 I had in a previous truck was great. Gives you that overdrive that saves $$

For an old "car" trans, mounting the shifter in the right spot is the hard part...I made a plate, and really short shift rods, for my Saginaw to keep the shifter in front of the seat! It's still a little off-center, but works good with a long handle.

If you can't fix it with a hammer and screwdriver, you need a bigger hammer.

I like the T5 for daily driving and if you can afford it the T56.My 1952 3100 has a T56 ,it is very easy to stay with the flow of interstate traffic and 80 to 90 seems like "55".

Thank you. Good point about the rear end. I am new to all this and it is challenge to think that far ahead. Looks like more Google time as I figure all this out. Thanks again. RAS

A couple of others have also mentioned the Muncie. It is a very attractive option. Thank you. RAS

I know the problem. The guy who installed the current tranny has it so close to the dask that I keep jamming my knuckles when I shift. I will need to dummy things up before final positioning. Thanks for the insight. RAS.

See this month's Custom Classic trucks magazine on swapping a camaro tailshaft on a T5 with an tailshaft from an s10 to get the shifter moved forward so it wouldn't hit the bench seat.
