Im planning to draw out a new steering arm for the axle to replace the old one ill try and post some pics of the axle and the original to show the comparison | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall | | Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 | I don't know if my 52 is like your 50 or not...and I don't know what a P-30 axle is....or what the major differences is on a 1ton vs my 1/2 ton... but I did use a chevy power steering box and put it outside and toward the front on my 52. Pics are in photobucket. All this may help you in some small way?! | | | | | Joined: Nov 2010 Posts: 122 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2010 Posts: 122 | heres the axle i have (i know its not a good picture) http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p290/diseasel/IMG_20101204_114932.jpghttp://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p290/diseasel/IMG_20101204_114944.jpgtheyre pretty much exactly the same, except the 2 upper bolts on the p-30 to the spindle are slightly lower than the original 1 ton axle. So im thinking that if i CANNOT run the drag link to the radius arm on the p-30 axle, i might have to fabricate and machine one similar to the one that CCP makes, except rather than a flat arm, the p-30 one would be more "L" shaped to rise above the kingpin maybe? Ddo you know the thickness of the plate on new arm that you have?

I know its at least 3/8" | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 171 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 171 | go to the scrap yard & find a big piece of 1/2" thick angle, say 6" x 6" or bigger. most of one leg could be cut off leaving enough for your two bolts with a space cut out inbetween to clear the king pin. look at speedwaymotors.com & checkout some of their steering arms. they're made in an "L" shape just like you describe. they way be cut from an angle & if not they certainly could be. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Chevy-Flat-Tie-Rod-Steering-Arms,35629.html

The CPP steering arm on my truck is 1/2" thick plate. Looks like it was plasma cut. If you're making a new arm, it may be worth checking whether it would work better for you if it were shorter than the CPP arm. I remade my steering arm 1 1/16" shorter than the CPP one, the turning circle was too big with the CPP Pitman arm and steering arm combination. Shortening the steering arm increased the steering lock without any problems with the wheels fouling any chassis or body parts. Otherwise this was the usual conversion with the 3.5 turn Saginaw steering box. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2007 Posts: 328 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2007 Posts: 328 | HI Here's some shots of the CPP kit installed in my 51 Panel - 1/2 ton. The install was straight forward and pretty easy. FYI, Everyone I talked to familiar with these P.S. upgrades recommends the optional 1 inch CPP tie rod. You can see it in the pics. After removing the stock one and comparing... I'm a believer, too. Too much stress on the stock one with the late model power unit. (And, yes folks, that is a 455 Buick sitting it there!)
