Was a back-up light available for the A.D. trucks? If so, how common were they? Can someone share info. on how it worked/was wired, fastened in the rear, etc.? Thanks.

They didn't come with turn signals, good luck on finding a back up light.

There are several good discussions on backup lights and switches for AD trucks on this forum. Use the search option with "+backup +light" or "+backup +switch" (without the double quotes). You will find several different ideas.

Does anyone have original/optional/accessory back-up lights for 55-59 light trucks? If so, would you please post photos of originals, or post part numbers for reproduction units?

I have an NOS still in the box back up light kit for a 55-59 Chevy truck , I believe the the back up lamps were the save, except for the 6volt bulbs, as a 51-52 Chevy passenger

I've searched the Forums here and just want to be period correct and maintain some originality...I'm considering mounting a Guide B-31 (need to purchase) on rear fender bracket and using a reverse-arm tranny mounted switch (if I can find one) as described in Jim Carter forum. Is this period correct/proper for a '48 Chevy 1/2 ton p.u. 4 speed floor shift?

Here's mine. Mine were NOS, still have the box, dated 1955. The part number is 987225. It is correct that the bezel, gasket, and lens are the same as the '51-'52 Passenger, as well as the '51-'53 Pontiac, the base and rubber mounting pad are truck specific. To my knowledge, no one is reproducing the base or the mount pad, but the lens, gasket, and bezel are available.

The type of back-up lamp I am looking at is mounted on a bracket, which in turn is mounted on the rear fender bracket. I see this as a neat little accessory to add, but I want to make sure it maintains some authenticity. They are showing up on eBay now and again, minus the switch. Any help with this project is appreciated; it is all a learning experience for me! Thanks.

I bought the kit off ebay many years ago. I installed it on the 55 2nd. That truck had the column shift. The back up lights were the same as on the early 50s cars. I made some brackets and installed them just above the rear lights. It worked well.

This kit also had the set up for a 4 speed floor shift transmission. I have purchased the plunger for this set up and plan to have back up lights on my 48. I will make the same brackets and install backup lights from an early 50s car. This truck will probably stay 6 volt. The 55 2nd was 12 volt.

Yes they were available, no they are not an official accessory. The most commonly used one is a Guide model B31 mounted on a clamping bracket. The 55-59 units came with two different switch mounts. one for column shift units and one for floor shift units. You could use a dash mount toggle or plunge switch to actuate it too.

Finding a good 4-speed (floor) tranny switch appears to be the biggest challenge. Any help on how this was mounted/wired would be appreciated. Thanks.
