I just purchased this Wrecker

http://donovanbray.com/tag/57wrekr

1957 Chevy 6700 4 speed manual, 2 speed rear end, with a PTO and Chevy 350 v8.

Someone questioned the 6700 and I must admit; I don't know more than whats on the truck.

For the Task Force trucks who are the top 3 go-to vendors.

What I mean is for my firebird, I pretty much go to Ames Performance, first. If they don't have it, Year One, and then if they don't have it I go to NPD; after that it's just scrambling to find anybody that has it (whatever IT is).

Is there a short-list of vendors you would suggest for one of these Task Force trucks?

Nice looking mater.

From spanky on a different post:

6700?, Donnoman your truck looks to be a 6100, or 6400. 6700 series is a Schoolbus chassis. If "6700" is what your fender emblems say, they have been switched.

In the one vin calc I ran it in it said it was a 6100; So I suspect you are right. Searching for 6700 all I got were schoolbusses.

Taking a closer look at the truck; Neither fender fits very well so I think I can assume they came from something else.

donnoman,

Your serial number confirms it's a 6100 (130" wheel base and a 60" CA).

6A57O102417 breaks down as follows;

6A = 6100 Series
57 = year
O = Oakland Plant
102417 = unit number starting with 100001 (you have the 2,417th 6A out of Oakland).

Welcome to the Stovebolt!

Very nice truck I really like it and the big window cab is rare very rare in the big trucks.
I will have to check and see I may have a set of 57 6199 emblems that I would be willing to part with. My truck is a 56 6100 and it has its correct emblems.

Send me an email if you have those emblems. donnoman@donovanbray.com

I want to try and identify the manufacturer of the wrecker boom setup. I'll get some closer pictures tomorrow or so. If you recognize it let me know, or know of some pics with a truck with a similar setup.

@Mike, what is the 60" CA ?

And is the 130" wheel base measured from center of front wheel to center of rear?

@HeavyHauler if my big window cab is rare; what was the more typical arrangement? Ahh I took a look at your truck I see now.

Perhaps because mine was to be a wrecker they wanted better visibility; or they just got lucky.

CA stands for Cab to Axel. Measured from the back of the Cab to the center of the rear Axel.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/55chevytruck/5053727013/

if you need any measurements checked for a comparison i am happy to assist.

Mine is a 4 spd manual 396 BBC - with a watson 2 spd underdrive - just getting it road ready now - had a little drive on Sat, and it is brilliant !

Does yours have shock absorbers ( Dampers) ?

Enjoy - it is a nice old truck I do love a big recovery.

donnoman,

My tow truck has the big window also...they're not that rare, but they are desirable. Take a look through the Gallery pictures for 55-59 and you'll see quite a few.

Well Mike out of more than 59 big bolts in the gallery you and Tom Petroff have the only two big window cabs and Tom put the big window cab on his. I would say big window big bolts are fairly rare. headscratch

Hevy,

I missunderstood, the big back windows cabs are rare on the BIG Bolts, but are not rare in general as lots of small bolts have them. Road Tractors and Tow Trucks were about the only Big Bolts that had a need for the big back window.
