I am pondering putting on 2 1/2" or 2 1/4" stacks on my 64 Chevy C-30. It is chassis cab and has a framerail width flatbed on it. It has a 283/SM420 soon to get NV. I want to get a mellow sound and look old school, but want opinions of you guys.
What do you think?

i don't have them on any of mine but i always thought it would look cool. there is a 1/2 ton pickup in springfield, mo here that has the and it looks pretty good. as long as you can remember not to grap onto the stack, i say go for it.

If you want to see what your truck will look like with stacks on it go to my photobucket i had them on my 65 when i bought it.I have a 350 in it and they do sound nice, but i took them off because i am not a stack guy. alot of people told me to leave them on but its what you like i guess

On a flatbed that would look good, IMHO.

To look right you would want to go with 3" or larger pipes, IMHO.

I thought about doing this on my short stepside, but thought it would look like a Dodge Lil Red Express knock-off and I was worried about some little kid burning his hands on the pipes.

If you use large diameter stacks you will need a good muffler or else it will be very obnoxious. Those large stacks are amplifiers.

I like the stacks on my 65 C-80. It has 30" glass packs under the cab and the stacks are3" chrome. If you roll up the widows you barely hear it but it sounds great from outside.

I always wanted to put a set of stacks on my '66 GMC Step Side Pick-up with the 305 V-6. But what stopped me was the Gas Tank. The Gas Filler location was just too close for comfort.

When I was a kid in the 50's stacks were very popular on late model "customized" trucks as well as early hot rod pickups. By the early-mid 60's they fell out of favor and went extinct. With all the other nostalgia stuff coming back, no reason stacks wouldn't look cool if they fit with the theme of the truck and you like them.

Had stacks on a 35 Ford back in the late 50's. Brother got it t-boned at an intersection while I was in the Navy. Always liked them. Go for it, you only live once.

There are very few little kids around where i am. I am gonna run it. How big can I go and still have good backpressure?

If you run 2-1/2" mufflers and then go back up in diameter to whatever diameter the stacks are the backpressure will be generated by the mufflers.

Any issues running a single stack with a 230?

As long as the girl is "stacked", I see no problems.

None other than the exhaust note would probably be over the top obnoxious unless you used a really long Smithy's muffler ahead of the stack.

Never heard of Smithy's mufflers. Thanks for the input! I was originally thinking about using a cherry bomb... But, I may have to check around, now.

Smithy's actually are glass packs, old school glass packs. Cherry Bombs came after Smithy's and are similar in sound.
