Should I be able to get the starter to turn over by touching the housing to ground on a battery and a hot wire from the post on the starter to the positive post, completely bypassing the trucks wiring? I cannot tell if my starter is good or not. I have 2 and neither will turn over using this method. | | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,438 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,438 | You have to push the button if the switch is on it. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 474 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 474 | You might want to take the starters to a good starter and generator shop for testing ? Knowing they work saves a lot of time .Just my two cents. Good luck and be careful . | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 | If the starter is not mounted, it will jump out of your hands with the reaction torque. That is just a hint to help you avoid bashed fingers. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,742 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,742 | +1 on that advice! Clamp the housing in a vise, firmly, but not tight enough to distort it, before applying any power! Jerry
