Harbor Freight sells a number stamping kit, $15. Good place for it would be the top rail of the frame in front of the steeing box. Problem solved.

My '51 GMC 350 series (formerly mine) truck was built (Oakland) and stayed in CA. all it's life. It is VIN'ed using the original engine's serial #.
Apparently, this was typical at that time.
The door post tag was never removed or altered in any way (imagine that, OCK!)
Be that as it may, DMV refused to change the paperwork to reflect the serial # on the door post (I wanted it changed, just in case I had to pull the motor out, I had a 270 waiting to go in).
Otherwise, get a moving permit, have it weighed and all the other inspections done. They will issue you a new VIN # tag and stamp it on the truck.
I know, that sucks; but welcome to California :rolleyes:

If it was not available I could say that it is homemade with a frame and body from different autos and a later motor then apply for a title and register it. [/b] Wait, there is a engine plate there in the door jam. Is that what they'll use, the engine number as the vin? Should be something like "A228XXXXXX"
