prior to the cam gear failure, we had done a valve check and were very pleased with the discovery that in spite of the engine (to my knowledge) has never had the valve clearance checked before, was completely within factory tolerances. in other words, there was no significant valve recession even though i have been running un-leaded fuel in it since i have been driving it daily since 95.
so...would now be the time to think about adding something to a tank of fuel every now and then or do i just run the one i brung?

Run the one you brung. The way it got you there (no lead additives).

And it was a cheap way of tempering the "octane rating" as compaired to blending like they do today to tame Octane. Also it was a REAL big money maker for the "ETHYL" corporation stock holders. I posted a bunch about this in another thread recently but don't remember where it was.
You won't have any valve problems with modern fuels p.j. and there is really no need for those fuel additives, ever! They're like those weight loss diets, a total scam.
