If you go with a stock 4 speed you'll gain a granny gear low. The final drive ratio will still be the same. When I put a 4 speed in my 55 1st I had to have a drive shaft made & cut a hole in the floor to clear the top of the shift tower.

tough? unbolt one, bolt in the other
any high gear is 1:1
the low gear in the old 4 speeds is useful if you need to let the truck drive itself while you throw the hay bales onboard

I should clarify, my 55 1st was an open drive line and the 4 speed tranny I bought out of the local salvage yard out of a 2 ton truck. The length was longer than the 3 speed so I had to have a shorter driveshaft made. I don't know if a PU 4 speed would be the same length as the 3 speed or not.

I swapped a saginaw 2 ring 4 speed into my 53 gmc and I love it. It's better through the gears. First gear is not quite as low as stock. Gets through traffic alot better. I'm also running a 3.08 gear. Oh! and an open driveline. I'm also using Patrick's custom Hurst shifter kit. Shifter sits real nice in the cab with this kit. Mine was originally a 3 on the column.

Wow, ctreser read my mail! I did the same swap in my '63 C-10 292 six. Mind saginaw is 3 ring and I picked it up at a swap meet and had it rebuilt. Fit right in no changes! It changed the way the truck drives completely! I start in second unless I have a load or on a hill. Fully syct and fun to drive with Patricks kit looks like the original top loader 4-speed. Get rid of that 3-tree....This is the way to go!!!

dbone, look for the post from me in the 4 sale section. If you're ever out this way, I have a 4-speed and torque tube rear end from a '50 3100 that I'd love to see it go someplace other than my garage.

I have one behind my garage you could have for free but I really don't think you would be happy with it, as was said previously, all you gain is the grannny gear. You want a t5 4speed so you will have a 4th overdrive.
