I drove my C20 1964 292 engine for the first time in the night. Everything was fine for about 10 miles then my dash light when out. I still had my headlights so I thought I was O.K. The next day I start looking at the problem and come to find out I also had no rear lights, but my turn signals work. So first thing I look at the fuse panel and I find a blown fuse. Now, I change the fuse and everything works. Here is the puzzling part! If I idle everything is fine but the moment I drive off the fuse blows. The fuse blows when I have my headlights on. I guess I have electrical issues. I really hate finding shorts!!! | | | | Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 319 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 319 | If you can't fix it with a hammer and screwdriver, you need a bigger hammer.1965 Chevy C10 | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 2,201 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 2,201 | Just guessing - "tail light fuse" Sounds like a short in the dash area or dangling wires that short out with motion of the vehicle. | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 61 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 61 | The fuse is the stop light one | | | | Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 116 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 116 | Possible faulty voltage regulator ?

O.K. elecrical problems are so f*****ing strange. I tried removing the headlight switch but I did not have the tool for the bezel ( anyone known what to use) then I started looking at wiring that the PO had sliced , taped etc.. Started the truck went for a ride and viola no problems. Hey guys what is the different between the $20.00 voltage regulator and the $90.00 one. I known one is period correct, but I do not care for that. | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 2,201 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 2,201 | $20 one is probably made in china out of Ford scrap metal. I would avoid it. Check your local autoparts store for options and ask for US made replacements. The headlight switch has a button on it behind the dash. You turn it all the way to the left, push the button and hold it and then pull the headlights on and the knob with shaft comes out of the switch. Once that is out of the way you can take the bezel off with a screwdriver. | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 61 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 61 | $20 one is probably made in china out of Ford scrap metal. When you find that button (it is small) and consists of a metal cap with a spring around it, you should be able to get it out fairly easy.

Second thought DO you know if the fuse is the right size or are you putting in too small a fuse?
third thought Get a wiring diagram.

At the present moment I believe everything to be O.K. I worked on some wires and after that I ran the same situation and nothing happened. I do hope I fixed it, time will tell. It will most likely happen when it is dark out!!!! | | | | Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 67 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 67 | I would guess you had no dash lites either, they are designed that way so you know you have no tailights when the dash lites are out also, i would look at the wiring where it goes through the floor by the gas pedal, plug in connector down the top of the frame rail. old wiring is brittle and easily exposed.... | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 61 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 61 | O.K. so I thought I had it all fixed. Well, the problem came back. I decided to replace the taillight, frame, headlight, and front harness, also my headlight switch and dimmer switch. After all this I only got my taillights to work. I trouble shoot and trouble shoot, nothing. I thought since I had replaced almost everything it was O.K. Wrong, the culpit the headlight switch defected. It was my second one. | | |
