Am looking to freshen up my 235 in my 54 truck. Found that RECON (engine rebuilding company) has a 58-235,145 hp.,hydraulic lifters with 848 head, that they offer as a replacement engine.

My past experience with local automotive machine shops has not been good. I was wondering if anyone out there had used their rebuilt long- blocks or knew of any negative feedback.

They market their engines through Adv/Discount and Autozone with a 1 year/15000 warranty. Their retail price delivered is $1275. with a $175 core. (I'll keep my 56 engine) Delivery is 2-3 days.

Fla54--I have NOT used one of their engines but that is what I am planning to do on a 37 I am working on for a fellow. I deliver parts for Advance (parttime) and in almost a year I have never heard of any problems and I am usually around the commercial sells etc pretty close. The price is right and I would certainly expect they would do a good job so as not to have any "returns". Just be sure to use good oil pumps etc when putting putting all the other stuff on it. There are not many "re-man" companies left so I imagine they do a lot of engines perhaps under different names. Around here the locals are good but expensive. I also think the engines have gone up from 1275 to 1375 in the past few months?????? As a side note, around here Auto Zone was about 100 more on the core than Advance so "measure twice, cut once".

Thanks for the response. I was hoping I wouldn't be deluged with negative comments. I've done a bit of research on their company and their "remanufacture" process and it mimmicks Jasper and some of the other companies that really consider their work "dear". I deal primarily with Azone, but got my quote from Adv/Disc. Will give AZ a shot at duplicating the core and will make sure I get the best bottom line. Once again, thanks for the heads-up!

The questions you need to ask are what is in the engine for the money? What improvements do you have over OE ?

*rings ( cast , moly , chrome)
*Bearing type (tri-metal, aluminum)
*Crank undersize limits(.010,.020,.030,.040 ,.050)welded shafts
*valves(new, reground, oversize stems,undersize stems ,valve guides)
*Valve seats ( Hardended for unleaded fuel)
*Valve springs ( new , used)
*oil pump ( rebuilt, new)
*timing set ( new, brand)
*head gasket and finish out set( Dana, Felpro,Corteco)
*pushrods ( new,used)
*camshaft ( reground, new,used , make )
*sheet metal , oil pan, timing cover,side cover included ?
