The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop 331 Hemi in a C-10

I know I may get thrown off the forum for asking this. But has anyone ever seen an old hemi (331 - 392) installed in a '62-'66 truck? The reason I ask is that I just bought a '65 with possibly a blown engine... and I just had a 331 Hemi out of a '54 Chrysler New Yorker rebuilt and am selling the car ('62 Studebaker Lark convertible) I had planned to put it in. So... possibly need an engine, have this one ready to be delivered to the house, and already paid for... I'm guessing it may be less of a headache to just drop in a rebuilt/crate 350 and be done with it. Then I'll just have this garage conversation piece that I'm buried up to my eyeballs in and the 727 transmission that I also had rebuilt.

Until I rebuilt a hemi engine, I didn't realize the true meaning of the word "hemi". Now I know the word is a Latin term meaning "four times the price".

I,d go for it. It will have to be the hit of the cruise night. Ther was one at the All Truck national show in a Ford. It was a53-56 I believe. He was a friend of one of the fellow Stovebolters & was from Iowa or Neb. Really nice.

Well it makes as much sense as all those Chevy V8's in the F*&% trucks and street rods so what the heck...getterdonedude.

I like the idea. 350's are like belly buttons. I own a Chevy because of my particular situation and who it came from. Before I got it I really wanted a Dodge.

I think the Stovebolt will look a lot better than the old Studebaker, no matter what engine you put in there. Don't let that cool old engine go to waste!

I'd keep the Studebaker!

Which motor makes best sense depends on how you intend to use the vehicle. Not knowing I'm not going to respond to that part of the question.

I would say it would be easier to put a crate 350 in, and I would not be surprised if you could sell that Hemi for more than enough to buy that crate Chevy.

Think about how you intend to use the truck and make the motor decision on that basis.

Scott's right though; a Hemi can go in anything.

OldSub, I'm selling the Studebaker to pay for the truck... really don't want another project to add to the already growing list. I've already got the Studebaker Hawk and really don't have an immediate need for a convertible. My plans for the truck are a nice driver, more than building a show truck.

The problem with the hemi is that I've got about $4K into it already and still need a distributor, water pump and a few other small parts. Not much of a market for that, even on E-Bay. Finding the right person might take a while.

Didn't know if it was going to be the same with the truck... I guess if I need to pull the engine I can always test fit it.

I say do it. Like others have said, 350s are a dime a dozen, and in everything. A Hemi is like a Harley. If you have to explain it to anyone, they wouldn't understand anyway. A Hemi engine looks and sounds like God had intended. Go for it.
