For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 20 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 20 | Just got my truck back together after a ground up restoration. Took it for it's first ride and seem to have a lot of play in the front end. Installed 3 1/2 inch drop axel removed 2 springs out of eight had wheels balanced and an alignment. When i hit a bump the front end wonders all over tried to adjust the steering box and made no difference. Can someone tell me the proper way to adjust and if it is common for steering boxes to have major wear. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 1,082 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 1,082 | do you get the "wander" condition only when hitting a bump ? could be "bump steer". i see you have a dropped front axle. your drag link needs to be parallel to the frame.
i have a 3 inch dropped axle and 1 leaf removed in my 57, with original steering box and leaf spring bushings, and it runs perfect at 80mph.
a few other guys will chime in here before too long also.

Sounds like a geometry problem. Look at the drag link like Leonard said, if its not parallel or darn close, that will produce bump steer.
Also, maybe the king pins are too loose? | | | | | Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 20 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 20 | One king pin seems a little loose I have ordered .10 over will be trying that first.

Alignment was done both wheels .03 out all good there. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 1,082 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 1,082 | yes, you want the drag link parallel or it will drive you nuts. small suspension travel will make it wonder a little, and large suspension travel will want to pull the steering wheel out of your hand. by the way, great looking truck. i like it.
