If I were to put a small chevy v8 with 350 trans. in my 54 3100 what type trans. would be best? short or long tail shaft? from car or truck? My truck is stock frame with straight axle. Thanks

My vote would be for the long tail shaft as it would cause the new driveshaft to be shorter. Are you aware that the enclosed driveshaft in your truck needs to be replaced with an open driveshaft configuration?

Please provide some more information as to what your plans are for the truck. How it is going to be used, what highway speeds expected, towing, hauling, distances?

There is no concern with the new driveshaft being too long with any transmission you choose in the 3100 model. Of more importance will be the rear mounting of the tranny. There have been hundreds or more of these conversions done. Tons of info available.
