Just installed used 261 in my 1953 Chev. 3/4--runs at 1500-2000 RPM, but can't get the darn thing to idle.

Has one 2-bbl carb., new fuel pump--

Any suggestions?

Hy tk261, check for a vacuum leak, hope that helps.

tk261,

A fast trick...remove air cleaner, start engine and hold at 1500 RPM or so. Peg throttle WOT and slam hand over carburetor hard and hold it there until the rig dies.

Wait a few minutes and start the (flooded) truck. If anything was lurking in the idle circuit, like water, it is long gone.

What carburator are you trying to use? 261's came with a 1bbl Rochester originally. The carburator may not have the right idle circuit for the 261.

Also make sure you are getting ported vacuum for the vacuum advance. If you have full spark advance at idle you will not be able to dial it in right.

Another consideration to go along with the one mentioned by Josiah - how is the intake manifold modified to use the two-barrel. The one barrel to two barrel adapters typically cause idle and low end issues.

Jon.

Good carburetion is fuelish hot air
The most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify.
