Could you explain a little bit more...everyone would love to help you.
Is this truck still 6 volts or has it been changed to 12 volts?
Will it start great every time, but won't idle?
How about if you keep pumping the gas pedal, will it try to run?
Tell us exactly what happens.

If it is burned out or not getting current from the ignition switch it will cause this problem. Use a test light & turn on the ign. switch. You should have current at both terms. of the resister & the pos. term of the coil. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. 1. Are the points gapped correctly? Are they new or old? 2. Are the plugs fouled or clean? 3. Is the timing set correctly? 4. Is the carburetor float level set correctly? 5. Is the Johnson rod been recently calibrated?

Is there a fuel filter on it that could be plugged. If you take the fuel line off at the carburetor, it should gush gas as you turn the motor over. Be sure to do this into a cup or pan..no fires. You know you have gas in the tank...could you have any water in the gas? Keep trying and let us know, we will figure it out with you, or die trying. Stuart

If the rig starts and has lots of fuel up to the carburetor, it sure sounds like it is the carburetor itself.
Just for grins, rap on the side of the carburetor with a screwdriver handle. You might wake up a stuck float.
If you can do it VERY carefully, try and keep the truck running by pouring little amounts of fuel down the carburetor after you get it started.
This will tell you every other system is working except the fuel system. Be very careful with the gas ...a backfire could cause havoc.
Pay no attention to the Johnson rod remark, it was said in jest.
Good luck and keep a wet towel handy for fires!

As 'wrenchbender' hinted at above, if your rig is a 12 volt system, and you have a ballast resistor in the primary lead wire, this is a "classic" failure.
The ignition system is powered in the START position, but because there is an open in the resistor, it is dead once the key returns to RUN.
This is a obvious scenario, but it isn't the same as the truck actually starting, running and fizzling out...that is a different animal.
