old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 35 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 35 | Hi Does anyone know what years of this transmission will fit onto a normal GM bellhousing such as mechanical or hydro with slave cylinder?,from what I know so far they made the NV4500 from 1991 to 1995 to fit all GM truck engines.
Then in 1996 to 2000 they made them to fit each engine on its own meaning they must have used a different bell housings or changed the transmission bellhousing bolt pattern. So the question is would the normal GM bellhouseing out of a 1986 bolt up to all years on the NV4500 1991 to 2000 to be able to use it with an older chevy engine.?
I would like to use a NV4500 in a 1972 pickup truck with a 366 big block engine.
I found out that the bolt pattern on the GM engine blocks is not the same for trucks after 1988 on the half tons or 1991 for the one ton R series trucks. An older transmission on a newer body style truck engine after 1988 or 91 will not hook up but it might work the other way around with the non-integral bell housings.? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 24 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 24 | You have a little bit of misinformation.
The engine to trans mount pattern stayed the same all the way up to the late 90's when they went to the new LS1 type of engine. All of the 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks stayed the same as the earlier ones until then.
I used to be a heavy line mechanic at a Chevy dealer, so I put in a bunch of engines.

There is a special bellhousing required for the transmission bolt pattern, as it is different than other GM transmissions. Good luck

I did not know that there is a different transmission bolt pattern with the NV4500 and that it needs a special bellhousing, I thought it would bolt up to the old cast iron bellhouseings, as I don't have the transmission yet to know. I don't know yet if it's worth the work of converting it over to a NV4500 from a SM465, I do a great deal of hwy driving and would like to have the OD to save fuel. In place of that the only other option for the truck is the manual new process OD 4x4 tranny. The problem is I heard there not the best for pulling heavy loads they tend to leak out oil another problem is they have no granny gear and are considered a light duty transmission according to what my local autowrecking yard told me, however first gear on them is 3.21 or something close to it.
Now as far as them having a different bellhousing is the NV4500 different in the 1991 to 1995 years or are you talking about the later years that they were built.?
The later ones made after 1995 look different on EBay then the early years. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 363 Member | | Member Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 363 | I ran across this in the archives and bring this up since I just found out about it. Advance Adapters has an adapter to put a dodge NV4500 up to a standard chevy SM465 bellhousing for just over $200. For stovebolters, we can mill the bellhousing out to 5.125 inch index hole, get the adapter and bore out the pilot bushing for the input shaft tip and use our 10 spline clutch.
