I know that I was probably looking right at it, but is your tach attached to the steering column? If yes, did you use a metal clamp?

The early model with the bakelite bezel would look most appropriate for a vehicle of that era. Two parts are necessary: the head and the transmitter unit. The transmitter was different for 6 and 8 cylinder engines and for 6 and 12 volts.
