The heat shield I put around the starter on my 350 helped, but I still get the hard start. So I'm thinking new starter or maybe gear reduction/mini starter? Any pros or cons? Recommendations/advise? Thanks

First of all, check the voltage at the battery posts, then at the output terminal of the starter solenoid (the big lower terminal of the solenoid) and see if there's a difference in those readings. Quite often, slow cranking is a result of too much voltage loss before the current gets to the starter- - - - -bad cables, dirty connections, etc. If the voltage drops below 10 volts while cranking, try a known good battery in the circuit before condemning the starter.

I had the same problem with the 350 in my 52 sedan, hard to start after getting warm, it would always start but made me wonder if it would...............after dealing with this, getting a heat shield, a hot shot relay, my wife asked me to have the battery checked,I told her it was not the battery.....................I was wrong, got me a new battery and no more problems, the old battery had a dead cell in it..........I dealt with this problem for a yr and half.. wifes are smart..

may not b e your problem but .....

I used a Powermaster mini on my 327/350 as exhaust runs very close to full size starter and was cooking it. Mini works great - lots of torque / no issues in 3 years.

cannot go past a relay mounted on the front support bracket . ignition switches on the relay the contacts of the relay are
1 connected to the battery cable at the starter motor
2 connected to the solenoid of starter
this bypass all the car wiring to deliver full available battery volts to the starter
cheap alternative relay $20 plus 60mins of your time fixed my 327/th400 truck and many others that have problems with hot starts
