For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 126 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 126 | I am putting a Offenhauser and a set of Langdons cast iron headers on my 250 in my '66 C10. That means it will need a new exhaust fabricated up. I'm thinking I will do it myself, but I've never done that before. Anything that I need to take into account that might not be obvious?
I have heard that you get a better sound out of the 6's if you don't have a crossover pipe between the headers. Also, I seem to recall that you want the pipes as close to equal length as possible.
I'm thinking I'll be going with a couple of glasspacks.....

The engines do best when they have a little backpressure. You may wish to take a look-see at my setup shown on the pick up page at the link below above my signature. I did it a little differently than most to get the dual exhaust but it works fine and sounds right IMO. Good luck. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,208 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,208 | The inline engine doesn't respond to the X-pipe or crossover pipe like the V8's do, so just go with two small dual pipes. I would stick with 2" or less and for a lot of noisy, mount the mufflers forward with extra long tail pipes. Just remember you are only running 125 cubic inches through each side, so you just don't need a lot of pipe.

The above way is loud.If you want somewhat quiet, place the mufflers at the end of the exhaust.

I want the loud, love the rumble. I dislike quiet engines..... What kind of mufflers do you use? | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 | Exhaust sound is highly personal. I like it sort of quite but but others don't of course. Tom Langdon has his own personal likes and dislikes and a person really shouldn't be swayed by that unless you've heard his car(s). It's like asking someone to describe what a strawberry tastes like that has never eaten one. The real problem is that if you don't like what you get then you are sort of stuck with it as hardly anyone will take it back once installed. It's why you need to hear them first. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 25 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 25 | Mufflers are Thrush glass packs.
If you build your own exhaust system.Build it the way you want it to sound.
I builted my own exhaust system. If I did not like the exhaust system sound.I would exit the pipe in a different location. Below is what I learned with trial and error.
For me,exhaust ending at the rear bumper, loud Ending behind the rear tire, louder Ending in front of rear tire, loudest
Remember,as the insides of the glass packs burn out,the sound will change.
Google muffler sounds, listen to the sound clips. Then deside which muffler sounds best to you. Then just use that muffler in your exhaust system build.
Good Luck

They give a nice loud exhaust note, but just dont look as cool! Back on topic tho, I've had great luck with the sound and material quality of MagnaFlow mufflers. There's also a couple types like the Thrush Turbo series that have a nice mild note at idle and while cruising, but when you put your foot in it it livens up real nice. I had them on my '65 3/4 ton behind a 327, almost couldn't hear it running at idle, but when I got into it EVERYONE knew it. 1956 GMC 370 dump " 'Tater "1970 VW Volksrod "the Black Bomber" 2007 Chevy Avalanche 2020 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, 2005 Harley Davidson FLHTCUI I dig all cars, old and new, whether they were hammered out of American iron, German steel, or Japanese tin cans. It had smitthy's muffs on it but was too rappy for my taste. Just had dynamax short turbo's put on. Quiet at idle (my neighbors like it better now) but nice while drivin' around. The passenger side is longer due to crossing under the motor and is a bit quieter too. Sure wakes up the six. | | |
